The journey to getting the right help in place for a child with special educational needs and disabilities is stressful and costly. Many parents find themselves needing to commission independent reports from SEND professionals to provide evidence of their child or young person’s Special Educational Needs (SEN).

A SEND professional who assesses a child can work out exactly what their needs are and what support will help them to thrive. The reports they give can help unlock understanding about a child or young person’s health, education and care needs to inform the special educational provision in an EHC plan.

“I will never forget my son’s first OT. She explained everything that was going on for him, so much of his autistic behaviours had been misunderstood up till that point. We managed to get the therapy put into my son’s EHC plan and it made such a difference to him at school and in the way we helped him at home”. 

Parents who qualify for legal aid can get help from a solicitor to prepare for an appeal to the SEND tribunal and can also access funding to cover the costs of professional assessments and reports.

Other parents must find a way to manage their own appeal and meet the costs of assessments to evidence their child’s SEN. Some go into debt by taking out a loan or remortgaging their home. Some parents do not start the process of applying for an EHC plan simply because they can’t afford to evidence their appeal.

Each professional will sign an individual Pro Help Pledge Agreement outlining the parameters of the support they are willing to give. This could be a geographical area they are willing to travel, a requirement for the assessment to be online, a maximum of two days’ time, age restrictions or areas of presentation catered for, avoiding busy times of year, or something else! The SEND Dynamic C.I.C. will facilitate the match between the parent and the SEND professional in line with the Agreement. 

We are looking for likeminded SEND professionals to come together to be a part of a dynamic force for good. Whether you are an Occupational Therapist, a Speech and Language Therapist, a Clinical or Educational Psychologist, an Education Solicitor or any other SEND professional willing to give back, we need you!

A note for parents looking for professional assessments: We have limited availability. Please do not contact SEND heroes directly to request a pro bono assessment. Pro Help Bank pro bono assignments are matched through our advisory services only. This means only parents who have been advised by us can be considered. Parents will also need to evidence that they cannot access legal aid and are required to sign an acceptance form for the offer. The SEND hero will contact the parent once the referral has been made by The SEND Dynamic.  However, if you are looking for a private self-funded assessment you may contact the SEND hero directly if their contact details are listed.
